Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the virus responsible for the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic. Scientists are working around the clock, studying the structure and infection mechanism as well as developing detection methods, vaccines, and therapies to fight SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. Although research is still on-going and evolving at a rapid rate, this series of learning resources will provide basic foundational knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 for researchers interested in learning about this field.
Structure and Infection Cycle
In this article, we will cover key structures in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including the Spike (S) protein, the N protein and more. We'll also cover what's known about the mechansim of infection, including the TMPRSS2/ACE2 and the Cathepsin L pathways. Includes an infection pathway chart.
Detection Methods
This knowledge covers how to detect SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 infections and three types of tests that are currently available: Nucleic acid amplification tests, antigen diagnostic tests, and antibody detection tests. You'll also learn when and which method is needed as each test type has its own purpose.
